MORE THAN A BASKET: You are still allowed to talk about everyday life

If someone you care about is facing cancer, it can be difficult to know what a conversation should look like.

Do you ask how they are feeling? Do you bring up the appointment? Is it okay to tell them something funny that happened with your kids?

You can ask what they feel like talking about.

A person’s interests and relationships still belong to them. There may be days when they want to talk openly about what is happening and days when they would welcome a conversation about a book, a pet, or the ordinary things going on around them.

I want our foundation community to make room for the whole person. Nobody should have to become a constant source of updates just because people care.

Follow their lead. Leave space for a change of subject. A familiar conversation, offered without pressure, can be a gentle way to keep sharing life together.
