When people hear about the Glen Adnam Cancer Comfort Basket Foundation, they often hear about my dad’s cancer journey and how losing him inspired me to begin this work.
But my dad was so much more than the illness that took him from us.
Glen was a father, a husband, a family member and a friend. He was someone who loved sports, especially hockey and football. He loved cheering for his teams, and he even tried to enjoy the music I loved because music was something we could share together.
Cancer became part of his story, but it was never the whole story.
That is something I want us to remember about every person who receives one of our comfort baskets. They are more than a diagnosis, a patient number or a treatment schedule. They are parents, grandparents, spouses, siblings, friends, coworkers and neighbours. They have favourite songs, teams they cheer for, stories that make their families laugh and people who love them deeply.
My dad’s name is on this foundation because his life—and the love our family continues to carry for him—inspired its beginning. Every basket created in his memory gives us an opportunity to see the person beyond the cancer.
When someone receives a basket, I hope they feel more than comfort. I hope they feel recognized as a whole person whose life, story and presence matter.
My dad may be the man behind the foundation’s name, but this mission is about so much more than one man. It is about every individual and family facing cancer and every person who chooses to surround them with kindness.
Glen’s legacy lives on through his four grandchildren, who carry his love, spirit and memory forward. It also lives on through every basket, partnership and act of compassion. Most importantly, it lives on through the reminder that cancer may become part of someone’s story, but it will never define everything they are.
